Overview: This piece was completed in my studio in a little over a week's time in early September of 2024. It was inspired by my newly found love of classical music and was painted while listening a variety of classical music on WMHT's Classical Music Station 89.1.
Process: I have always enjoyed painting on what I refer to as the "horizontal" canvas. In actuality, this is a 15 x 30 canvas that provides me a horizontal vision when painting.
This piece began, like others, with a full 2 or 3 layers of gesso (if I remember correctly) and some free movement of the gesso using a large scraper. From there I began to mix and unleash a variety of colors using many different tools working in unison with the classical music piece I was listening to at the time. My movement of the paint ebbed and flowed for quite some time until I began to see some patterns I liked. There really isn't all that much else to say about the specific process details I used to create this piece. I used brushes, scrapers, pouring, and palette knives to create something that I connected with and that visually moved me. This piece, like all others, was finished with a protective varnish.
Meaning: To me, this piece represents my new found love and appreciation of classical music. When I look into the painting, the colors represent the musical instruments that are used to create classical music. The paint patterns/shapes represent the flow of the music as it moves in and out of me, touching my soul and moving the strings of my heart to make me feel relaxed and at peace. This piece is my tribute to, my story of, the beginnings of a love story with classical music. A story that is both similar and different to the story of my also falling in love with jazz, hip hop, Yarn, the Samples, the Grateful Dead, and many more genres/bands of music. Music is such a HUGE part of my life and plays an instrumental role in my creative expression, as it once again did in my creation of this Rebirth in Classical Music.
